The cuisines and wines, the culinary specialities and gastronomic traditions of Europe are a living part of our cultural heritage – they reflect the diversity, beauty and prosperity of our continent and bring people together, regardless of all national and generational differences. It is in this spirit, and in memory of the fourth President of the Federal Republic of Germany, that the Walter Scheel Medal has been awarded, since 2014, to personalities and institutions who have made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of European culinary culture.
